Akkeshi Taisho season The Peak of Summer (700 ml)

The Akkeshi Distillery, based on the northern island of Hokkaido, have been regularly releasing fantastic whiskies since their inception, all as part of their 24 Solar Terms Series. The 24 Solar Terms are a traditional Japanese concept that follow the lunar calendar. The year is divided into 24 seasons, or solar terms, including the likes of the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice. Each whisky in the series has aimed to demonstrate the the effects each term has on whisky production and this new Seimei single malt is no different. Seimei is an abbreviation that means “clean, bright and lively”.

The whisky inside is smooth and moreish, with notes of red berries, candied citrus peel, sweet honey and gentle spices that linger in the background. The label features an impressive dark green and blue colour palette that will make the bottle stand apart in any collection.

St. George Spirits 40th Anniversary Edition Single Malt Whiskey (750 ml)

The mash bill for the 40th Anniversary single malt is the same one St. George has used since they started laying down barrels in 1997: 100% two-row barley at five precise roast levels. What sets this whiskey apart from our annual Lot series releases is the special quality of the casks used to make it.

The hallmark of their single malt cooperage has always been ex-bourbon barrels, which they prize for their ability to showcase the delicate flavors we coax off the still. While they use some French oak as well, the signature of aging is the way it stays out of the way—befitting a distillery that began as an eau de vie house. That said, St. George loves what finishing can do to a whiskey, and for this 40th Anniversary release, they've amplified the fruit notes that have always been part of their whiskey with Cognac, apple brandy, and umeshu barrels. Port and sherry casks add even more fruit notes, along with depth and richness, while the California Sauternes-style casks that we began using with their 35th Anniversary release pull the diverse flavors together with a weighty, unctuous quality that delivers a long finish.
